Great article. The Phillies missed out on signing Beltre — twice! Instead they opted for Polanco. He could’ve helped with defense, OBP and right-handed power. And he’s on track to out-perform his current contract.

When I look at the mistakes RAJ has made recently, I rank missing out on Beltre up there with the Howard deal and Papelbon deal.

It would indeed have been great if the Phillies had been able to sign Beltre, but I don’t think he wanted to come here for the kind of deal he was likely offered – his value was depressed after playing in Seattle. He specifically wanted the pillow deal he got with Boston, to try to increase his value. Worked out wonderfully for him.
