Mike Schmidt to join the Phillies’ broadcast team for Sunday home games

According to Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News, Mike Schmidt will be joining the Phillies’ broadcast team, calling all 13 Sunday home games. Schmidt is joining Jamie Moyer and Matt Stairs as recent additions to the team, replacing Chris Wheeler and Gary Matthews.

Schmidt has previous experience as a broadcaster, calling Phillies games for PRISM back in the early 1990’s. His best on-air work came as a guest, dropping this gem in a conversation with Harry Kalas:

I remember watching games in 1990 on PRISM and listening to Schmidt to color when he was with the team for the whole year. He’s a natural. He would have gone down as an all-time great broadcaster if he had decided it was something he wanted to do. He was a really, really good color analyst, and I’m really excited about this.

Harry dropped the ball, there. The natural follow-up question would have been, “When did you stop beating your wife?”

It’s as though Harry’d never even been to law school.

I’m sure Schmidt will do a fine job, but all of this broadcast booth reshuffling really feels like they’re just trying to slap a pretty face on the front of everything to cover up how bad the brand is.
