When we were assigned our roster of players to write about for this offseason’s report cards, I looked at my list and immediately had an idea of what/how I’d write about each member of the club. But not Steven Lerud. I’ve always viewed Lerud as an org player, someone who’d only get to the big leagues in the event of an unlikely plague of injuries. That’s essentially what happened in 2012 when Lerud made his season debut after starting the season as the fifth catcher on the organizational depth chart. Carlos Ruiz’s drug suspension, a Brian Schneider injury and the Tuffy Gosewisch “trade” forced Lerud into action. He played in three games.
In 2013, Lerud had five plate appearances and struck out in four of them. He turned 29 two weeks ago.
It seems likely to me that Lerud will start 2013 as the backup at either Triple-A or Double-A, depending on what the Phillies decide to do with Sebastian Valle.
