Dusty Baker Is Unoriginal

You may recall early in 2008 the Phillies played a prank on Kyle Kendrick. Charlie Manuel told him that they had traded him to the Yomiuri Giants in Japan for a player named Kobayashi Iwamura. Kendrick fell for it pretty hard before Brett Myers, the brains of the operation (imagine that), screamed “You just got Punk’d!” in his face in front of a crowd of reporters who guffawed at the young right-hander.

Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker decided to play a similar prank on journeyman reliever Arthur Rhodes before telling him that the lefty had made the All-Star team. Per Yahoo! Sports:

Arthur Rhodes recently got summoned to manager Dusty Baker’s office for the news: The Cincinnati Reds were trading him to the New York Mets.

It was a joke. Yet, the way his journeyman career has gone, Rhodes believed it. And why not?

“He already had the team picked out,” Rhodes said. “I was a little emotional.”

Then Baker gave Rhodes the real message. He was going to a new team, all right—his first All-Star team, at age 40.

Zero points for originality, Dusty. But the prank never gets old. I would give the prank a 6 out of 10 rating, but there was no video to accompany it, so I’ll give it a 4.

Although picking the New York Mets as a destination may be a low blow. Any trade to the Mets should be accompanied with a prescription for anti-depressants.
