Are you nuts? Lets refrain from bashing Amaro before we even see his players play a single game.

It doesn’t matter if Ibanez puts up a 250 OPS+ and plays stellar defense in 2009; the three-year deal given to him was completely illogical.

Amaro can absolutely be judged at this point in the off-season.

I’ve held off bashing Amaro, but I agree now he deserves it. He was too quick to sign Ibanez, because it looks equal players (Burrell, Abreu, Bradley) will be signing for less years and less millions. I love Moyer, but 2 guaranteed years? Ho Park is superfluous, he makes no sense at all to sign, especially not at that price. He sucked for nearly a decade then had a decent year in pitcher-friendly Chavez Ravine for crying out loud!

Well stated. While I have my doubts as to whether anyone would really take on Eaton or Jenkins without the Phils paying a substantial chunk of their salaries, I think you’re dead on with respect to everything else.

And I think you hit on the key point: while every GM makes mistakes, Gillick was able to cover for his by finding gems like Dobbs, Durbin, Werth, Romero, etc. Amaro’s first attempt at a “gem” was splashing a rather silly amount of money on Chan Ho Park, which only further reinforces the view that he’s more Wade-esque than Gillick-esque.
