At BDD, I review the Matt Holliday trade in which the Oakland Athletics gave up Huston Street, Greg Smith, and Carlos Gonzalez. The verdict: a steal for the A’s.

When I first heard about this, I thought it was insane. But then I thought about the same thing you brought up. Wait for a desparate contender to come calling that needs a bat. He really isnt giving up all that much. He’s probably going to swindle the astros, or something (maybe not, but you know what i’m saying. Find a stupid, desparate GM, and take him to the bank.) I’m shocked the Rockies are going to make this deal. It sounded like they were shooting for the moon, with the names I heard they wanted.

Ludwick, Shumaker, and Boggs sounds like a gold mine compared to what they got from the A’s.

Another crafty little deal that fits the Moneyball model. If only every team followed that method, then maybe the free agent market wouldn’t be so ludicrous.
