Moon, I can't stand Joe Buck (and the fact that he's paired with the insufferable Tim McCarver makes for a suicide-worthy broadcast). While Brantley isn't my favorite broadcaster of all time, he gets the job done and you can only respect that he's willing to admit when he's wrong.

Bob, he does repeat himself. Within about 10 seconds, he stated three times that Encarnacion "isn't a clutch player."

Mean, good to see you. I can only imagine how Joe Morgan would have handled that if he had been in Brantley's shoes.

I am both encouraged and impressed that Brantley took responsibility. And you're right, many pundits and media professionals would have dodged the issue or denied it completely.

Still, I've always liked Jeff's on-camera game. I hope he doesn't make me regret it.

While I am not a Jeff Brantley fan (his drawl turns me off and he tends to constantly repeat his comments), I do agree with your defense of him in this case. I think what he was saying is that, if you are planning to bunt, get someone at bat who can bunt - otherwise let him swing. I think most of us in Cincinnati watching or listening to the game had the very same concerns the announcers did - Encarnacion is a nortoroius streak hitter and I think most of us envisioned a strikeout or flyout with no advancement. I think we were all as surprised as the announcers. And he did admit he was wrong (but only as far as that at bat went). I love the FJM website but any Cincinnati fan, knowing Encarnacion, would have said the same things.

Maybe it's the southern drawl that I find appealing or the fact he presents his argument without sounding like he KNOWS EVERYTHING, but he is paid to speak his mind and "the book" in that situation called for a bunt.

Good point you made about 1st and 2nd with no outs as opposed to 2nd and 3rd with one out. I also agree that using a guy's spring training stats are useless.

I like Brantley and I feel Brennaman is underrated too. If it weren't for Joe Buck, he'd be the voice of Fox baseball.
